I did the job before I advised on it.

I am a licensed Swedish biomedical scientist, legitimerad biomedicinsk analytiker, and I worked inside clinical laboratories from 2009 to 2024: eleven years in clinical pharmacology at Karolinska University Hospital, in 2016 as Hamilton’s application specialist for the Nordics, and then as technical lead building ABC Labs’ toxicology laboratory to ISO 15189 accreditation.

Since 2024

Today

I consult independently through my own firm, Ebihara Solutions, mostly remotely from Japan, with a home in Stockholm. The laboratories I know best are Swedish. The work is offered to laboratories in Sweden, the rest of Europe and the Asia-Pacific: workflow reviews, LIMS requirements, automation, method validation, quality systems and commissioning, with site visits where the work needs them and a longer on-site engagement open for the right project. Site visits in Swedish, English or Japanese; written work in Swedish or English.

Miguel Barroso has extraordinary working abilities, namely his intelligence, positive attitude and engagement. He can multi-task very well and is always ready to lend a hand whenever needed. His communication skills add on top, turning him an asset to any company/service. Here at Clinical Pharmacology in Karolinska Hospital, his contributions are recognized by everyone and the workflow is much smoother due to him.

Professional license and degrees

In Sweden, biomedicinsk analytiker is a protected professional title and a licensed profession. The license is issued by Socialstyrelsen, the National Board of Health and Welfare, and recorded in its HOSP register of licensed health and medical care personnel, where status can be confirmed. Ask and I will give you what the register needs to look me up.

  • License

Legitimerad biomedicinsk analytiker, effective 15 September 2010, issued by Socialstyrelsen.

  • Degree

Biomedicinsk analytikerexamen, Degree of Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Science, 180 credits, Karolinska Institutet, 2010. The professional degree that carries the license.

  • Degree

Medicine kandidatexamen, Bachelor of Medical Science with a major in Biomedical Laboratory Science, 180 credits, Karolinska Institutet, 2010. The same program confers both. Degree project graded väl godkänd.

2009 – 2024

Employment

  1. 2021 – 2024

    Chief Laboratory Technician, Toxicology

    ABC Labs AB, Stockholm

Stood up a new business line, drugs of abuse and other biomarkers by LC-MS/MS with the clinical chemistry that checks specimen authenticity beside it, in a company that had until then been a pandemic testing operation. My remit ran from reference material procurement through LIMS design and method validation to customer contact and reporting to finance.

I ran the technical side of the toxicology unit’s accreditation, the validation framework, audit preparation, CAPA and documentation, with the QA function alongside. I started in November 2021 and the accreditation was granted in October 2023: medical testing to ISO 15189 and workplace drug testing to EWDTS, on the public register as Swedac 10532. Accreditation is won by the laboratory and QA together. I led a team of eight technicians and engineers. The build is set out on the selected work page.

  2. 2018 –

    Owner

Ebihara Solutions, sole trader (enskild firma)

Registered in 2018 and run alongside full-time employment; the first customer was the hospital I worked in. It designs, makes and delivers laboratory parts that no vendor sells, and since 2024 it is the firm I consult through.

Traded with customers between 2018 and 2024: 234 tube inserts to Clinicon AB across two orders in 2021 and 2022, and 200 parts to clinical chemistry at Skåne University Hospital in Lund in 2018, among others. Small numbers, real customers, signed for on delivery.

  3. 2016

    Application Specialist

    Hamilton Nordic AB, Kista

The vendor’s side of the robots I had been running: independent planning and programming of Hamilton STAR platforms, customer support across the Nordics, on-site service, and following up application requirement specifications against what the laboratory needed. It is why I can say what a vendor’s installation qualification does and does not prove. I then returned to Karolinska.

  4. 2010 – 2021

    Biomedical Scientist

Karolinska University Hospital, Clinical Pharmacology, Huddinge

Eleven years of routine and development in therapeutic drug monitoring and drugs-of-abuse analysis by LC-MS/MS, with clinical chemistry and PCR alongside. The drugs-of-abuse laboratory held accreditation from the College of American Pathologists alongside the department’s Swedac accreditation to ISO 15189 and ISO/IEC 17025, so the routine I ran answered to the US checklist and the ISO standards at the same time. Instrument responsibility for the department’s automation platforms, and from 2015 the main programmer of its Hamilton STAR liquid handlers. I kept my access to the doping control laboratory throughout and helped with its projects, so I worked across all three of the department’s laboratories.

Method development, student supervision in routine teaching sessions with the instructional material to go with it, and two blood-sampling instructional films for the hospital. Interrupted by the 2016 stint at Hamilton.

  5. 2009 – 2010

    Laboratory Assistant

Karolinska University Hospital, Swedish Doping Control Laboratory, Clinical Pharmacology, Huddinge

Summer work over two summers while still studying, running doping analyses independently in a laboratory accredited under the World Anti-Doping Agency. A student job, before the license in September 2010, in the same department I then spent eleven years in.

Skills

The things I have done in a laboratory that was accountable for the result.

  • Sample flow

The chain from requisition to disposal, written down and designed as one thing: what the requisition must carry, reception and registration, preanalytics, retention, storage and disposal, including chain of custody for regulated workplace drug testing and the records that make it provable.

  • Laboratory systems

Translating a laboratory operation into requirements a system can implement. Worked in Analytix, FlexLab and STARLIMS; specified the LIMS setup, the requisition, the registration flow and the worklist and reporting path for a laboratory setting up a new analytical service, and sat between the bench and the developers while it was built.

  • Workflow and operations

Where the time and the risk sit in a laboratory, and which layer a problem is on: process, systems, method, instrument or automation.

  • LC-MS/MS

Method development, validation and routine operation across urine, blood, saliva and dried blood spots, in therapeutic drug monitoring, drugs of abuse and doping analysis.

  • Quality

Validation frameworks and the plans and reports under them, internal QC, external quality assessment, measurement uncertainty, procedures in the laboratory’s own quality management system, audit preparation and CAPA; taken through an ISO 15189 accreditation alongside QA, after eleven years of routine under CAP and ISO accreditation.

  • Instruments

Site preparation, dimensioned bench drawings, acceptance protocols and the laboratory’s own commissioning against the system already in production, from both sides: the laboratory taking delivery and the vendor’s application specialist.

  • Automation

Hamilton STAR programming in VENUS, as the main programmer of a hospital department’s platforms from 2015 and for Hamilton’s own Nordic customers in 2016; Eppendorf epMotion for PCR setup; the pre-purchase comparison, and saying when a deck is not the answer.

  • Scripting

The glue under the worklist chain: generation in the instruments’ own software, MassLynx among them, spreadsheet automation in Excel and VBA, and structured text, CSV and XML. Scripting, not software engineering.

  • Design and making

Parametric CAD in SolidWorks, 375 native parts, 20 assemblies and 9 drawings, with a validated print pipeline and delivered parts on nine instrument platforms. I still write the scripts and draw the parts myself.

Publications

Three peer-reviewed papers in dried blood spot analysis, first author on one. The years are publication years: the hematocrit paper rests on bench work at Karolinska and was published after I had left; the drugs-of-abuse and phosphatidylethanol methods were developed while ABC Labs’ toxicology laboratory was being built, and the PEth method was the first one that laboratory took into routine.

Conference posters

Work from the Karolinska years was presented as posters at three congresses of the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology. Rotterdam in 2015 carried an automated plasma multi-method for antipsychotics and an antidepressant; Kyoto in 2017 the whole-blood flow, Automated sample preparation of whole blood — the need for speed, which is the flow on the selected work page and which I am first author on; Iguazu in 2019 the hematocrit-in-dried-blood-spots work that became the paper above.

Peer review

Two completed reviews for the Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis in 2026, recorded on my ORCID profile by Elsevier. My name appears in the literature in four spellings, one of them a misspelling under correction; ORCID 0000-0003-2518-3176 is the reliable index.

How I got here

I live in Japan and keep a home in Stockholm. Japanese is the reason I could move here; the year in Kyoto came between the hospital years, not instead of them.

The design work started because the parts I wanted did not exist. I took a 3D CAD course at Dalarna University in 2018, the same year the first tube inserts went out of the door, and the laboratory that bought them was the one I worked in. It grew from there into something small but real, and it is still the part of the work I enjoy most.

That is the background. The question is your laboratory.

If any of this fits work you have in front of you, describe it in your own words and I will reply with the questions I need and a suggested next step. The first conversation is free.
